Which counters can I forecast?

Any performance counter that a SCOM rule collects into the data warehouse, from any management pack, including Linux and UNIX counters and your own rules. Use a Percentage value report for counters in percent and an Absolute value report for the others, such as Free Megabytes or a queue length.

How much history do I need?

At least 14 days with data before a report gives a date. 60 to 120 days works best; the default is 90 days. Shorter periods react faster to change, longer ones give steadier dates.

Why is free space shown as % used?

So that every value reads the same way as the planning threshold, which is in % used. A disk with 25 % free space is shown as 75 % used. Reverse forecast direction is switched on automatically for counters whose name contains Free or Available.

Why does the Plan column say "Act now" before the threshold is reached?

The act-by date is the date the forecast reaches the threshold minus the Critical days, which stand for the time it takes to order and install capacity. When that date has passed, the report says Act now, even if the threshold itself is still weeks away. Set Number of days for Critical Level to your real lead time.

What does "Add 25 % capacity for 12 months" mean?

The extra capacity that keeps the counter under the threshold for the Plan capacity for period, as a share of today's size: on a 400 GB disk, about 100 GB. It uses the trend plus two standard errors, so busy days stay under the threshold too.

What is a level shift?

A sudden step in the data, such as a cleanup, a migration or a disk that was extended. The forecast then uses only the data after the step and says "fitted from <date> (level shift)", because the trend before the step no longer applies.

Why does the forecast date change from day to day?

Every run uses the latest data. With Best fit, the report also chooses the most accurate model for each series again, and a new level shift can change the fitted period. The range in brackets shows how uncertain the date is; a wide range means you should look at the chart.

Can I send the reports by e-mail?

Yes. Open a report from the Reporting workspace and choose Schedule. E-mail delivery needs the SMTP settings of SQL Server Reporting Services; without them, only Windows File Share is offered. Top N at risk is designed for a weekly e-mail. Set Expand charts to Yes to include the charts in the PDF.

Can I change the default parameter values?

Do not edit the reports themselves: SCOM overwrites them when you upgrade the pack. Instead, set your values in the console and choose File > Publish, or create a linked report on the report server. See Run the capacity reports outside the SCOM console.

Does the pack send data anywhere?

No. The forecasts run inside the SCOM data warehouse database, in an assembly with the SAFE permission set, which has no network or file access. Nothing leaves your environment.

Does it slow down the data warehouse?

The pack adds no scheduled jobs. The reports calculate their forecasts when they run, from the daily and hourly aggregates that SCOM already keeps. Large heat maps and profiles over big groups take longer to run, like any report over many objects.

How does the licence work with several management groups?

A licence key is issued for the name of a SCOM management group. If several management groups write to the same data warehouse, the licence must cover all of them; contact OpsLogix for such a key. See Capacity reports show "No License Found".

Can I use my own logo?

Yes, with a PowerShell script that ships with the pack. See Use your own logo in the capacity reports.
