The VMware Management Pack adds six tasks to the Operations console. Some of them you run yourself. Others are used by the VMware IMP Configuration Dashboard in the background. This article lists all of them, where to find them and when to use them.
Overview
| Task | Target | Run it yourself? |
| OpsLogix Deploy VMware Collector Task | Management Server | Yes, when the collector is missing or out of date |
| OpsLogix Uninstall VMware Collector Task | OpsLogix VMware Collector Service | Yes, when you remove a server from monitoring |
| VMware Get Host Ram Disks | VMware ESX Server | Yes, for troubleshooting |
| OpsLogix Test VMware Connection Task | Resource pool | No. Use Check Connection in the dashboard. |
| OpsLogix Inventory Task | VMware vCenter | No. Used by the configuration dashboard. |
| OpsLogix Set Inventory Task | Management Server | No. Used by the configuration dashboard. |
To run a task, you need an Operations Manager role that is allowed to run it. The configuration dashboard itself needs an account in the Operations Manager Administrators role.
How to run a task
- In the Operations console, open the Monitoring workspace.
- Open a view that shows the target object. The sections below name the view for each task. You can also use Discovered Inventory and Change Target Type.
- Select the object.
- In the Tasks pane, click the task.
- Click Run and wait for the task output.
OpsLogix Deploy VMware Collector Task
Where: Monitoring > Discovered Inventory > Change Target Type > Management Server. Select the management servers that are members of your VMware resource pool.
What it does: installs the OpsLogix VMware Collector on the selected management server. The installer is included in the management pack.
- If no collector is installed, it installs the collector.
- If a different version is installed, it uninstalls that version first and then installs the version from the management pack.
- If the same version is already installed, it does nothing.
The task writes its progress to the task output and to the Operations Manager event log (source Health Service Script, event ID 1000). The task times out after 5 minutes.
When to use it:
- A member of the VMware resource pool doesn't have the collector.
- You upgraded the management pack and want to update the collector right away.
- You added a management server to the VMware resource pool.
Check Connection in the configuration dashboard runs this same task on all members of the selected resource pool. All members must be available.
OpsLogix Uninstall VMware Collector Task
Where: Monitoring > VMware folder > VMware Collector > State VMware Collector Service. Select the collector service on the server.
What it does: uninstalls the program OpsLogix VMWare Collector from that server. It writes its progress to the task output and to the Operations Manager event log.
When to use it:
- You removed a management server from the VMware resource pool.
- You are removing the VMware Management Pack.
If the server is still a member of the VMware resource pool, the next Check Connection installs the collector again. Remove the server from the pool first. See How to remove a member from the VMware resource pool.
VMware Get Host Ram Disks
Where: Monitoring > VMware folder > ESXHosts > ESX Hosts. Select a host.
What it does: lists the RAM disks of the ESXi host, with this information for each RAM disk:
- Name
- Free space in percent
- Free space in KB
- Maximum size in KB
- Reserved space in KB
The task reads this information through the vCenter connection, with the same monitoring account. It doesn't connect to the host directly.
When to use it: when the VMware ESX Host Ramdisk % free and KB free space monitor changes state and you want to see which RAM disk is filling up.
OpsLogix Test VMware Connection Task
Target: the OpsLogix resource pool for the VMware Management Pack.
What it does: tests whether the collector can log in to a vCenter or ESXi host with the given account. It reports whether the connection succeeded, with a message and the vCenter version.
When to use it: don't run it from the Tasks pane. The configuration dashboard runs it when you click Check Connection, and fills in the connection name, account and password for you. Without these details, the task has nothing to test.
To test a connection, go to Administration > OpsLogix MP Configuration > VMware IMP Configuration Dashboard, select the connection and click Check Connection.
OpsLogix Inventory Task and OpsLogix Set Inventory Task
These two tasks handle the license inventory, that is, which ESXi hosts are assigned a license.
- OpsLogix Inventory Task (target: VMware vCenter) reads the current license assignment for a connection.
- OpsLogix Set Inventory Task (target: Management Server) saves a new license assignment on the members of the resource pool.
The configuration dashboard uses these tasks on the Assign tab when you click Refresh or Update. You don't need to run them yourself. To view or change the license assignment, use the Assign tab in Administration > OpsLogix MP Configuration > VMware IMP Configuration Dashboard.
